Classical Dance of South India - Bharatanatyam
Bharatanatyam
is a classical dance form originated in the Indian state Tamil Nadu. It is
believed that the original form of Bharatanatyam was danced in the temples by
female dancers to worship gods and goddesses. The dance is accompanied by
classical Tamil music and poems. The
theory of this dance form is based on the ancient text of dance and drama which
is called Natya-Shastra. Bharatanatya, is a solo dance form, so one dancer
plays several roles by using hand gestures and rich facial expressions as a way
of communication. Since this dance form is originated in the dance in Hindu
temples, the devotional feeling is dominant. In this modern time, Bharatanatyam
is very popular all over India, as well as in all over the country as a
classical, but highly original art form.
